Microadventuring with Alastair Humphreys
|So excited I had a chance to interview adventurer, blogger, seven-time author and motivational speaker Alastair Humphreys! His accomplishments are nothing short of amazing… he’s bicycled around the world, rowed the Atlantic and even walked across the whole of India. No wonder National Geographic named him their Adventurer of the Year 2012–and he’s just getting started. His mission is to encourage people to go on what he calls “microadventures,” a cheap, close, simple, short excursion outside and out of their comfort zone.
Tell us about your current project.
My current mission is trying to persuade people to have a microadventure, especially if they have never done it before.
What inspired you to begin this project?
Because people love the idea of adventure but generally don’t have the time, money, kit of expertise to do something epic. I want to persuade people that it is better to do something cool but short rather than do nothing at all.
What do you hope to learn or teach from this experience?
That the wilderness is closer than you think, and that anyone can experience it if only they make a little effort.
What would be your advice to someone that wants to take on their own larger-than-life challenge?
Start small! What’s the first tiny little thing you need to do to get your project in motion?
Who is your favorite explorer, adventurer or scientist?
What’s next?
I’m writing a kids book so it’s a few weeks at the computer for me…
Thanks so much, Alastair! Can’t wait to see your future adventures.
